Pilates Classes for Every Level in Westwood at Sheppard Method Pilates
In the world of Pilates, the apparatus used to practice can greatly influence the extent of the benefits of each exercise performed. The two most well-known pieces of Pilates equipment are the Reformer and the Cadillac. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or are new to the exercise form, you may not be sure what the difference is between these two equipment pieces.
At Sheppard Method Pilates, our Westwood Pilates instructors can help you determine which apparatus will fit your fitness goals and practice level and how to incorporate each into your practice. We understand that some students may be better suited for one or the other and are happy to help you find the perfect class for your needs.

The Pilates Cadillac and Reformer Apparatus
The Cadillac is also known as a trapeze table. This apparatus resembles a four-poster bed, with a raised horizontal platform surrounded by A-frame. This frame supports various bars, straps, springs, and levels that suspend from the frame.
The Reformer resembles a bed, like the Cadillac, but does not have a four-post frame above the platform. It has a movable carriage platform that rolls back and forth. Springs attached to the rolling platform provide resistance that can be adjusted for each student’s level, and there is a foot bar at one end along with straps that attach for leg and arm exercises.
Understanding the Benefits of Pilates Apparatus
The Pilates Cadillac:
- Extensive range of exercises at all levels
- Suitable for rehabilitative work, strength training, and flexibility practices
- Takes up quite a bit of space; usually remaining stationary once installed
- Great choice for deep stretching, therapeutic exercises, and more advanced Pilates practices that require hanging or standing on equipment
- Great for improving spinal mobility
The Pilates Reformer:
- Great for full-body workouts and a wide variety of exercises
- Utilizes instability (rolling carriage) to work the core throughout the exercise
- Some Reformers are compact and can be stored vertically, while others are left stationary once installed
- Dynamic movements, perfect for strength building that target the core, legs, and arms
- Better for students without physical limitations or those who have some familiarity with Pilates exercises.
- Focus on stability and coordination
- Good for comprehensive workouts
Determining which apparatus is best for you will be based on your fitness level, your goals, and if you’re installing at home, your available space for installation. Many students who take classes at Sheppard Method Pilates or other Pilates studios choose to incorporate both apparatus practices into their routine.
