What to Expect at Your First Westwood Pilates Class

Even if you have practiced Pilates at home with a virtual program or attended Pilates classes before, starting a practice at a new studio can be overwhelming. From new faces to a room full of intimidating equipment, it is perfectly normal to feel a little out of your depth. Be comforted in the fact that Pilates is appropriate for all fitness and experience levels! A friendly and knowledgeable Sheppard Method Pilates instructor will welcome you to ensure you belong.

Some tips to help you ease into Pilates culture and etiquette are:

  • Arrive early at the Pilates studio
  • Warm up before class if you have time with simple stretches or a brisk walk.
  • Refrain from chatting while you are waiting for a class to end, as well as when your Pilates instructor is administering the exercises.
  • Let your instructor know of any injuries or bodily changes so they can assist you and your form properly
  • Ask questions, but use judgment as to interrupting a class flow or waiting until afterward
  • Wipe down and return any equipment that may not be yours to the studio before you leave.
  • Your First Pilates Class: What to Wear

You don’t need to buy anything fancy for Pilates classes, but there are a few things to consider when selecting what to wear to your first Westwood Pilates class. Some tips to help you dress for Pilates include:

  • Avoid clothing with tiebacks, tassels, and drawstrings, as they can be uncomfortable when lying on the mat or table, and can even get caught in Pilates equipment
  • Choose workout wear free of metal or plastic that can dig into your skin and catch on the mat and equipment such as zippers, buckles, clasps, and buttons.
  • Go fresh-faced! While we all want to look and feel our best, sweating makeup in the eyes or onto the equipment can be an unwelcome distraction.
  • Out of respect for fellow studio attendees, avoid perfumes and strongly scented deodorants, lotions, and sprays.
  • Remove accessories or jewelry.
  • Go barefoot: Pilates movements incorporate full movement of the feet, ankles, and toes and are best performed without shoes. If you prefer to wear socks, choose ones with gripped bottoms.
  • Pull your hair back: tying up long hair can help avoid it getting caught in equipment or your face as you work out.
  • Form-fitting clothes work best: Stretchy and comfortable clothing, but not baggy, will stay in place as you move. Additionally, wearing form-fitting workout clothing can help your instructors assess your alignment and symmetry during class.
  • Wear what feels good: Pilates is for all body types, so most of all, aim to be comfortable! You may opt for a light sports bra or other attire you are used to working out in.

What to Bring to Your First Pilates Class

While we will provide everything you need for your first Westwood Pilates class, you may opt to bring your mat. You can bring in a yoga mat, or select a Pilates mat specifically, which is typically a little thicker to accommodate Pilates exercises and be more comfortable on the knees, spine, and wrists. Lastly, bringing a bottle of water to stay hydrated is always a good idea. For hybrid cardio classes and advanced Pilates classes, you may also consider bringing a towel as you may get sweaty.
