Earn a Pilates certification and become a Pilates instructor to help people find the ultimate balance.
The benefits of including a Pilates regimen in your fitness routine are numerous and well documented. The positioning, stretching, controlled movements and breathing techniques you learn in a Pilates class strengthen core muscles, improve balance and increase flexibility. Pilates can even help relieve stress and promote overall relaxation. If you regularly practice Pilates already, you’re likely fully aware of these benefits; but how can you take your mind-body experience to a whole new level? Consider becoming a certified Pilates instructor.
Pilates has gained popularity in recent years. We’re even seeing Pilates being included in the curriculum at schools, community centers, physical rehabilitation facilities, and amongst professional athletes, so the career options for a certified Pilates instructor are growing as well.
As the paradigm shifts toward wellness, more and more people are taking an active interest in their overall health. For many people, this not only involves a focus on physical conditioning, but also on the mental and spiritual side of things. This explains the momentum Pilates has gained in recent years. With demand steadily on the rise, there’s never been a better time to become a professional Pilates instructor.
If you’re passionate about the body-mind experience, and you put in the time and effort, you can carve out a satisfying and lucrative career as a Pilates instructor. As in most careers, teaching Pilates isn’t a recipe for overnight wealth, but the more education and credentials you acquire, the higher your earnings will be. Depending on where you work, continuing education opportunities could also be available at little to no cost.

Advice for Becoming a Pilates Instructor
Are you thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor? That’s amazing. Here at Sheppard Method Pilates, we are acutely aware of everything that goes into getting your Pilates certification and starting to teach. Through our experiences, we’ve come up with a few pieces of advice to help make your progression to Pilates instructor as smooth as possible.
Understand Why You Want to Become a Pilates Instructor
Understanding the motives behind why you want to become a Pilates instructor will be extremely helpful at the beginning. Very few people make a lot of money doing fitness instruction, especially not at the beginning. As cheesy as it may sound, having a true passion and desire to teach others and help them achieve their fitness goals will help motivate you throughout your Pilates certification process and beyond.
Outside of motivation, you’ll need a few other characteristics to really have success as a Pilates instructor. You will need good communication skills in order to effectively teach the people in your Pilates classes as well. A general interest in the human body and how it works can also be beneficial as you are obtaining your Pilates certification. The most successful teachers are strongly self motivated, with good time management skills. Building a steady clientele can be difficult, but fortitude and a good attitude goes a long way.
Don’t get Discouraged!
Becoming a full-time Pilates instructor is not something that happens quickly. After you get your Pilates certification, it takes a while to build up your client base. While you may want to jump straight into working as an instructor full time, it typically takes a while to get to that point. Sometimes it can become discouraging to know that you’ve put so much time and effort into training for a position and not see immediate results.
Don’t worry! We’ve been there too. Transitioning from one job to another takes time. Look for any opportunity to teach Pilates. Offer in-home instruction, look for jobs at the local college or gym, or even launch an internet workout setup. It may be stressful at first, especially if you are trying to balance another job with your teaching. Try and remember that passion and motivation that you had when you first started to become a Pilates instructor and allow that drive to keep you going through the stressful times.
Never Stop Learning
Just because you’ve received your Pilates certification and have become a Pilates instructor does not mean your education is over. Always keep an eye out for a new exercise or method to incorporate into your own teachings. New workouts can keep your students interested and will refresh your excitement about being a Pilates instructor!
Benefits of Getting Your Pilates Certification
LEARN ABOUT PILATES CERTIFICATION
There are Many Reasons to Get Your Pilates Certification
Sheppard Method Pilates offers the opportunity to get your Pilates certification. People decide to get certified for a number of reasons, and while it’s a personal choice, there are many benefits that come with being certified. We highlight some of the primary reasons and benefits of getting your Pilates certification.
Workout While You Work
If you’re thinking about getting your Pilates certification, you probably love doing Pilates and have some sort of passion for it. After you’re certified, you can start finding work teaching classes as an instructor. This means that you’ll be doing Pilates for a living. So essentially, you’ll be getting paid to exercise and do what you love. This is usually the reason at the top of the list for most people that get certified.
Flexibility in More Ways than One
Once you’re certified, you’ll have more flexibility…literally! It’s a bad joke, but it’s true. Obviously, your body will experience the benefits of Pilates, but so will your work life. Whether you work at an established Pilates facility or you start an operation of your own, your hours and work life will be more flexible. With the options you’ll have, you can balance more than just your body – you can balance your life!
You’ll Learn More About Your Body
Pilates certification is a comprehensive process. You’ll learn all about the ways the body works and moves, and become even more in touch with your own body. If you’ve always been interested in the science behind body mechanics and the way the body responds to exercise, you’ll love the knowledge you obtain while getting certified.
You’ll Help Others
If you pursue teaching and instructing people in Pilates classes, you’ll be helping them achieve the same balance and benefits that you’ve experienced. People come to Pilates classes for a variety of reasons, but often they’re hoping to become more fit and healthier. Sometimes people with conditions such as arthritis also seek out Pilates to help relieve their symptoms. As a certified Pilates instructor, you’ll be able to help them find the fitness, flexibility, and balance that they’re looking for.
