Similarities and Differences Between a Pilates Studio and a Yoga Studio

When you walk into a pilates studio for the first time, you may think that you have mistakenly walked into a yoga studio. You will notice mats on the floor, unique exercise poses, and an instructor at the front of the room. Don’t be alarmed. It is true that yoga and pilates have some similarities and may even, at times, practice similar exercises.

But what is it that makes yoga and pilates so similar? They have the same basic focus – connection of the mind, body, and spirit. Now that we have established what makes the two exercise routines similar, the question now becomes what makes them different?

Difference Between Pilates and Yoga

Although exercise at pilates studios and yoga studios have the same basic focus they are, in fact, very different from each other. Below are a few of the major differences between the two:

Origin:

Yoga is a much older practice than pilates. It has been around for over 5,000 years, where pilates has only been around since the 1900s.

Meditation:

Although both pilates and yoga focus on the mind, body, and spirit, yoga sometimes implements meditation into their practice where pilates does not typically do this.

Routines:

One of the main differences between pilates and yoga is the exercise routines. Exercise routines at a pilates studio focus on a balanced body, strengthening the core, increasing flexibility, and toning muscle. Additionally, pilates sometimes uses machines, such as a pilates reformer, to enhance the workout routine. Yoga, on the other hand, focuses on balance, strengthening more broad muscle groups, and spirituality.
